A living Atlas of Europe’s local sustainability transitions
The collection brings together 508 European grey-literature case studies, with particular attention to energy, mobility and climate. Cases focus on local transition processes at community, municipal or regional level, documented through a Social Sciences and Humanities perspective.
The resource connects the CASTAL Archive, which preserves source documents, and the CASTAL Dataset, which provides structured metadata on place, time period, transition themes, methods and source characteristics. Together, they support cross-case comparison, diachronic analysis, secondary qualitative research and meta-analysis.

The dashboard brings together five views: Home, Cases by Country, Transition Scope, Document Overview and Case-Study Explorer. The Home page summarizes the collection with headline figures and a searchable overview of cases by title, place and country.
This document explains how the CASTAL Archive and Dataset will be maintained and expanded beyond the project. It outlines the K&I–DASSI management model, eligibility criteria for new case studies, how to submit suggestions, and the workflow for review, curation, periodic updates and long-term preservation.
This collection brings together ten secondary studies that use the CASTAL Atlas to explore local sustainability transitions. The papers span methodological frameworks, psychosocial dimensions and thematic applications, demonstrating how the Atlas’s case studies and structured metadata can support new data-driven analyses.
